Latkes for lunch

today has been unbelievably cold, and a great day for meeting a friend for lunch. i suggested the place and i hadn't really eaten inside.....just picked up sandwiches to-go several times during a break from setting up an art festival. i even got there first.....an amazing thing. my friend brought a friend of hers along, so that was nice.....the 3 of us will meet again next month for lunch at the mia.
anyway, it's a deli and restaurant, and a treat......i had latkes with sour cream and apple sauce and they were great, if a bit greasier than i prefer. they had blintzes, and all other sorts of goodies, but i couldn't pass on the latkes. there is also a bakery and i had to check it out. they had rugelach and hamantashen, some yummy looking onion rolls, but alas they are not a substitute for friedman's bakery. they didn't have the wonderful sweet cheese rolls, the rolled pastry with cream cheese, sour cream and sultana raisins or the other fabulous treats i remember. those dollar size pastries that were unresistable and calorie free for sure.....they were too small for calories!! of course. i suspect i may never find the equal of friedman's. mrs. friedman always said they used old country recipes and no one else could do it.....i think she may have told the truth!

Martin Luther King Day

we had snow last evening, with about 3 inches on the ground this morning. it is all white and beautiful again......a little slippery on our street, but the main roads are clear and great for driving.
the library had a martin luther king presentation this afternoon, about 30 in attendance, a different group from the great decisions regulars. interesting that.
julie landsman was the presenter and she is the author of several books, the one mentioned today was white teacher talks about race. she had taught in the mpls schools for over 25 years, mostly in north side schools and for her last several years, with kids needing help. a great speaker with a great understanding of people. she spoke for 45 minutes and led a dialogue for another 45 when she had to stop to be interviewed by npr for "all things considered." our community is pretty white bread so her talk was very intriguing to me and made me realize again how little i know and much i have to learn. i'd go some distance to hear her talk again. she teaches at the college level now and works with teachers on how to reach kids. she told some amazing tales. i'm so glad there are people like her out there.

Lights shining thru snow

one evening, earlier this week, i was wandering through the living room and looked out the window. to my surprise a couple of neighbors were in the front yard. i opened the door and yelled hello and found that diane was taking some photos of the lights showing thru the snow on the front garden shrubs. she sent her fave to me today. i really like it......what a neat effect.

Slower days

we are running at a slower speed, but have put some things in order. the tree is dismantled and resting outside in its gigantamous white plastic bag. the lights are wound around pieces of cardboard and stored away for next year. we have left the outdoor lights in place....they look pretty in the snow for now.
we let the air out of the mattress and wrestled it into submission and into its plastic bag and into further submission to get into its box. whew. looks like there is more space in several rooms. we should probably be thinking of painting on down the hallway, changing the hall light fixture and perhaps painting the bathroom or studio or yellow room, but we are not shoulding on our selves at present. it feels good. :)
