White cutie

Lazy fall day

today feels lazy.....well, except for the weekly wash and even that feels lazy. i'm listening to one game on the internet, watching a couple more on the tv.....hey it's the regular saturday menu. i am not reading football for dummies either. :)
i've been beading again.....i need to schedule an opportunity to sell some of these beauties. i have some ideas percolating again and that feels pretty good!

GONE!

sometime in august i blogged about planting our japanese maple. it's doing fine by the way. anyway, other plants arrived with the maple. i planted them and it went well except for a clematis which died. i wrote to the company and they said they'd send another. last week it arrived, so i planted it carefully according to the directions. it was doing great, looking very healthy. one night there was a possibility of frost so i covered it and then removed the protection and checked in the morning and it still looked great. the following day i went out to check again, and the plant was GONE. there was a shallow hole remaining.....some one must have thought that a healthy plant is a tasty plant.....or something. perhaps we are not destined to have a clematis. i think i'll try again in the spring!

A busy week

this has been a busy week. there was a great decisions presentation at the library, and i went early to help set up chairs and do anything else that needed doing. i had my two classes at the y....bodyflow on tuesday and studiostrength on thursday. i took the earlier bodyflow this week because i enjoyed it when that teacher subbed in the later class a week ago. getting to the y for an 8:30 am class was a bit of a stretch in itself, but i did it, and enjoyed it. the strength class is interesting.....i am a classic wimp, so i had never lifted a weight, don't do pushups and other handicaps. i still don't do pushups, altho i may learn how.....when i get some strength. :) so far my shoulders object loudly and the instructor is great at offering options.
last evening, judith and i went to a reception at the grand hand to meet and great the official pilgrimage from the acc in new york. heads of various organizations in the tc's were also there from northern clay, goldstein, mn history society, and others. they were talking to us about a conference to be held in minneapolis october of 2008. it's on innovation in design, and could be pretty interesting. it was fun to see the people we knew and to meet the others, several of whom are young and very enthusiastic.
today i went for a walk with judy and had a good visit at the same time. we did a quick shopping tour of marshalls and then i headed for home. i made a dinner to take to kay and dick since kay is pretty much off her feet for the next 2.5 weeks before she gets a new knee. i stayed for a couple of hours so dick could get out of the house and run some errands.
i've enjoyed following the adventures of the bookmobile in northern california. wish it could come here!

Power point is deadly

i went to a lecture and supposedly dialogue today that was very disappointing. the presenter evidently didn't watch the excellent introductory video, and then proceeded to give a power point presentation that echoed the video but was poor in comparison. to add to the joy of the pp, he read it to us while stating that one of the problems in the world was lack of education. i was extremely good and didn't stand up to say that i was educated and he needn't read to me. bah! most of the slides were statistics which added immensely to my joy.
at one point he asked how much time he had, and then used up all the time available for a possible discussion with more pp slides. bah again.
these presentations tend to be excellent, so i was really surprised at this one. did i mention disappointed?
ok now i feel a bit better, i said my spiel and i'm glad.

Another big anniversary

19 years ago this weekend, don and i (the one in tears) loaded two unhappy teen-age girls, a caged cat loaded with kitty downers, and proceeded to our new home in edina. it was not a pretty sight, and our stop in des moines was not that great either. mikey had growled softly or moaned most of the way, and was wandering around the motel room most of the night. the next morning we headed on north and when we reached our house, there was mary alyce waiting at the door for us. what a marvelous treat that was!!
the other part of this move, was that patrick who had decided to go to a university close to home, was suddenly faced with the fact that his whole family moved 400+ miles away from him! how bizarre is that? he was already in class when we left, so we packed up his things and put them in a new room, in a new house that he didn't see until thanksgiving weekend. (his welcome present to the new place was a case of mono which affected the rest of his college year!)
anyway, we went through many upheavals the first few years, but i think we all have thrived and grown with the transplant experience. it's hard to believe it's been that many years. edina does feel like home now, but the old good friends are still living in the old neighborhood in omaha, although there are lovely new friends here. there's something special about those women with whom i raised the kids.....nothings changes that.....ever. i feel so fortunate that i have been able to make friends here in this city.....i was afraid that i was too old to have the joy of new friendships. it seems sort of silly that i felt that way, but so many of the old friendships were formed or at least nourished by being active in the schools and our girls were beyond the age where moms took active part in the schools on a daily basis.
my ploy here was to become active in the arts, and very early on i joined a pottery class which at the time felt like a definite livesaver. it probably was! i soon found great friends there just like i'd found them in a similar class in omaha. amazing.
so.....happy anniversary to us!!
